Recovery policies implemented today offer the opportunity to restore, reset and rebalance our most important relationship with nature by addressing the causes of unsustainable consumption and production. A carefully managed transition to circularity will be critical to deliver on the SDGs, the Paris Agreement, and the biodiversity and pollution agendas. It will be essential to recover from the pandemic and to lift people out of poverty, while staying within planetary boundaries.

The event will discuss the alignment of current recovery packages with SDG 12 goals and explore good examples opportunities. The event aims to conclude with the most important global steps to scale up circular economy for a sustainable future. Our panel of international leaders and experts will discuss the questions that matter.

  1. What are the biggest opportunities we are currently missing for an inclusive, green recovery? Where are we right now, are we on / off track and what more needs to be done?

  2. In which sectors and value chains will we generate the biggest impact for resilience, jobs, and a pollution-free planet? Where are the biggest gains to be had, and what are the leverage points?

  3. What are the barriers and incentives that need to be addressed? From a policy and finance perspective, what do we need to do differently? What incentives and economic policies are needed? And how can we make this happen?

More information about the event can be found here:

We hope to see you connected!

2021 Philippine Student Market Study Virtual Competition - November 20, 2021
How to do market analysis and prepare a presentation for the 2021 Philippine Student Market Study Competition

A special workshop will be held on Saturday, May 29th from 8AM to 10AM (GMT+8) for instructors wishing to teach their students how to do market analysis and prepare a presentation for the 2021 Philippine Student Market Study Competition. During the session we will thoroughly discuss the components of a comprehensive market study and explain the process to create a market study presentation.  We’ll also talk about the guidelines and requirements for the competition, presentation and scoring criteria, and answer questions.  Training materials will be made available to attendees that register in advance and the workshop will be recorded.  The workshop is free for faculty at SHARE Center member schools.

To attend you must register in advance by clicking here.

We are very excited about the 2021 Philippine Student Market Study Competition and invite hospitality and tourism students from universities and colleges throughout the Philippines to participate.  Teams may include both undergraduate and graduate students.   This is an opportunity for students to showcase their knowledge and ability in front of other students, professors, industry professionals, and recruiters.  Each team will conduct a Market Study on a market (city) of their choice.

Parallel to the ongoing Focus Group Discussions (FGDs) and scheduled Key Information Interviews (KIIs) for the Tourism Response and Recovery Plan (TRRP) review and updating, the Office of Tourism Development Planning, Research and Information Management (OTDPRIM) will be conducting an online survey for DOT accredited establishments. This is to assess the current conditions of the enterprises, the reasons for availment or nonavailment of the recovery packages, other sources of financing tapped, and to identify their immediate needs in the next 6 to 12 months.

In this regard, DOT-NCR enjoins accredited establishments and members of the tourismrelated associations (accommodation, transport, restaurants, tour guides, farm tourism, etc.) to answer the survey, not later than 14 May 2021, which can be accessed through this link:

Turning life as we know it upside down, the COVID-19 pandemic has jumpstarted the digital economy, forever changing how the global markets work. Shining the spotlight on the changes brought about by rapid digitalization and its effect on new entrants to the global workplace, this conference will tackle the new requirements for success: digital literacy framework, global communication standards, micro-credentials vis-a-vis a college degree, Philippine PISA results vis-a-vis national competitiveness, and the ability to adapt to remote work, the gig economy, hybrid workforces and globally connected teams.

UN Environment Programme - Transforming Tourism in Action: Tackling Plastic Pollution (April 27, 2021 3PM-4PM Manila Time)

We are pleased to invite you to the first Transforming Tourism in action: Tackling plastic pollution webinar (held in English) for Europe, Asia Pacific and Africa organized by UNEP. This session will be happening on Tuesday, April 27 2021, at 9:00 a.m. -10:00 a.m. CEST (3:00-4:00 pm Philippine Time).

Among the many adverse consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic is the sudden surge in the volume of plastic waste. According to the Asian Development Bank, percentage increase of medical waste in South-East Asian national metropolitan cities (Manila, Jakarta, Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok and Ha Noi) will likely jump by several hundred percent. Due to incorrect disposal and waste management, plastic products such as gloves, masks and hand sanitizer bottles have already been found in the natural environments of major tourism destinations. The higher demand for disposable plastic items, which in many cases are unrecyclable, could mean more plastic waste ending up as pollution and thereby undermining the natural environment upon which much tourism activity depends as an invaluable shared asset. The COVID-19 pandemic has made it more complex to use plastics sustainably in many destinations and tourism businesses.  The pandemic has also shed light on the vulnerability of global value chains and on the relevance of circular business models in the use of plastics. Circular principles for single-use products provide credible, alternative solutions. Restarting tourism responsibly requires that future operations be guided by a science-based approach in order to support governments, business, and local communities to understand the trade-offs of decision-making processes that aim to align hygiene and health protocols with sustainability criteria.

Since 2019, tackling plastic pollution had already been defined of the priorities reflected in the Roadmap for Low Carbon and Resource Efficient Tourism in the Philippines. The webinar will provide an overview on the evolving environment, both from the public and private sector perspective, that will require and enable tourism business actions to take ambitious actions to tackle plastic pollution.
